October’s Spooktacular Programs

Hello!

October is upon us and that could only mean one thing: Halloween-themed Woodworking Workshops all month long! Below we have a list of the upcoming programs and information that the Makerspace will be having this month. Learn how to use different tools like rasps, hammers, and saws to create props for your costume, working catapults, and much more in our Woodworking Workshop Weekend (try saying that 5 times fast!). We are also excited to introduce our new Wild Card Weekends, one weekend out of the month we try out new workshop ideas as well as have a guest teacher come in to teach a class. For more information look below for the associated programs.

Make It! Woodworking

Saturday October 19 and Sunday October 20, 2013

Head on down to the Makerspace to learn how to use basic hand tools like hammers and saws, and then build your woodworking creation.  Workshop participants are free to create anything they like but this weekend we are preparing for NYSCI’s Dead or Alive Celebration by building catapults, skeleton marionettes, and props for Halloween Costumes.  We have two workshops each day from 1:30-3:00 and 3:30-5:00.  Workshops are for ages 6+, and cost $10 per parent child pair ($8 for NYSCI Members).  Register on the day of event at the NYSCI admissions area.  If you have any questions about Makerspace programming write to Reid at rbingham@nysci.org.

Make It!: Wildcard Weekend

Saturday October 26, 2013

One weekend every month the Makerspace has its Wild Card Weekend where we try out exciting new workshop ideas.   Our first weekend is inducted with Dr. Blankenstein teaching an electronics workshop where participants will learn how to solder and get to build their very own Spooky Sounding Sci Fi Theremin Synth (try to say that 5 times fast!).  We will have two sessions that go from 1:30-3:00 and 3:30-5:00.  Each session is limited to 12 participants who must be 10 years of age or older.

Make It!: Wildcard Weekend

Sunday, October 27 2013

To celebrate Halloween and the Day of the Dead we are mixing up our format and having three different activities for the price of one! Make ghastly glue jewelry, wildly colorful sugar skull masks, and more.

About

The Maker Space is a learning environment where children, teens, adults and families can tinker, design, and create together.

In our workshops we use real tools to make real things and re-use everyday materials in exciting ways. From woodworking and plaster casting to electronics and 3D printing, we encourage experimentation, open-ended exploration, and believe that making mistakes is a great way to learn.

Our workshops are hands on and can get messy, so when you come to a class, don't wear your favorite shirt!
